![]() ![]() ![]() In collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania and the Franklin Institute, we assembled a group of scientists, graduate students, and volunteers to run exhibits for hundreds of children from around the greater Philadelphia area. We are currently looking to adapt our model to other parts of Washington state, partnering with new schools, museums, and organizations.įor more information see: Mid-Columbia STEM Collaboratory Website Philly Materials Dayīack in 2011 Drexel decided to host a citywide science fair dedicated to condensed matter physics. We have improved the lives of hundreds of children, many of whom have gone on to pursue education in STEM fields. Our program has been tremendously successful and rewarding, gaining recognition throughout the state. The curriculum we have developed can be adapted to all age levels and we are always looking for opportunities to expand our efforts. We typically hold demonstrations for students at local parks and schools, introducing them to concepts of scale, observation, and connecting structure to properties. I have been fortunate to help lead our efforts to increase microscopy and materials science education in the Tri-Cities area. We sponsor a variety of STEM education outreach efforts, work with schools and families to enrich students' lives. Over the years I've had great fun working with a number of different groups, including the organizers of the annual Philly Materials Day and STEM education outreach through the Mid-Columbia STEM Education Collaboratory in Tri-Cities, WA. NEST+m students blossom into practitioners–scientists, mathematicians, technologists, writers, historians, musicians, painters, linguists and artists–who learn from and with each other.Outside of my lab work, I enjoy reaching out to the community to share science, whether through writing, public speaking, or demonstrations.They develop the academic mindsets and metacognitive skills necessary for long-term learning. NEST+m’s students feel valued and cared for.At NEST+m, intellectualism, inclusivity, collaboration and exploration within and beyond our school community enable our students to lead lives filled with learning, discovery and purpose.Our three grade levels-Lower (grades K–5), Middle (6–8) and Upper (9–12)-occupy their own unique space within our large, sun-filled building, but they share a single educational philosophy and a unified school spirit. We are the only public Gifted & Talented school in New York City in which students can move seamlessly from Kindergarten through 12th grade. We offer an academically challenging curriculum designed to produce young scholars who are distinguished by their intellectual capabilities, communication skills, capacity for leadership, ethical values, and readiness to contribute to the betterment of the world at large.
